Council Approves Pilot Cycle Track

Calgary could soon be a more bike friendly city after city council approved a pilot for a new cycle track. I was especially jubilant reading this as I was struck by a car while biking downtown yesterday. Luckily, only scrapes and bruises were sustained as I rolled along the concrete. Sadly, as an avid biker, this wasn't my first encounter with an engine bonnet. 

I am usually not one for promoting personal opinion; however, I think this is a huge step forward for the city. It will create some issues for motorists, and they deserve to be heard, but I am hopeful it will help encourage a more active lifestyle.

Strength Training for Runners

A growing body of evidence supports the use of strength training for athletes; showing a 1/3 reduction in sports related injuries and cutting overuse injuries in half. The problem lies with determining what to target. The exact details of what to strengthen and how to do it are highly individual depending on your goals, strengths and weaknesses. Common muscle groups to target include the core, quads, hamstrings, calf muscles, and glutes. Starting a strength training program will help improve your muscle and tendon’s ability to manage load and decrease the amount of energy you need to run. A general program may prove effective but building a program based on a thorough assessment will achieve better results.
